What Is The Difference Between The Types Of Wood We Sell?

Ironbark: While it may take more time to get started, this type of wood lasts a long time, thus making a warm overnight burn easily achievable. It can be great for wood-fired cooking too (eg; pizza ovens and BBQs).
Mixed Hardwood: It typically contains redgum, blackbutt, stringybark, greygum and angofora. It burns quicker than other types, but it is easier to light up.
Vintage: Ironbark/box. This type of wood has been proudly seasoned  for 20-80 years. It gets started without much trouble and provides long, hot and clean burning. Ideal for pizza/BBQs.

How Much Wood Would I Use In A Season?

In a family, people usually consume between to 2-8 cubic metres per season, for an average of 6 cubic metres. However, this depends on a multitude of factors, such as frequency of use, length of season, weather conditions, as well as type of fireplace.
Feel free to talk to our staff here at Big Axe Firewood for further help and suggestions.

Is The Wood Wet When It Rains?

Only the surface of the wood is actually wet after rain! This has little impact on your ability to burn the wood, in fact it will dry very quickly.

What Size Are The Pieces Cut To?

In general, we cut to size for a slow combustion heater, approx 20-35cm in length and 10-15cm in width.
Specific types have specific sizes:
Common Size: Lenght 25-35 cm; Width 10-15 cm
Pizza/BBQ Wood: Lenght 30-35 cm; Width 6-10 cm
Premium Kindling: Lenght 30-35 cm; Width 2-5 cm
Potbelly: Lenght 15-25 cm; Width 10-15 cm
Long Pieces: Lenght 35+ cm; Width 10+ cm
